Mawana Sugars Indian Open Marathon is one of the most popular marathon events in India and has earned itself the laurels of being one of the best technically organised event. It is on the national calendar of Athletic Federation of India. The event has produced leading women athletes like Asha Aggarwal, Sunita Godara, Suman Mehta Rawat, and Rigzen Angmo. Some of them went on to be awarded the coveted Arjuna Awards. The winners of the event have been sponsored for London and Boston Marathons The marathon started in 1982 under the name 'Rath India Open Marathon' to coincide with the 9th Asian Games. The event was rechristened in 2006 as 'Mawana Sugars Indian Open Marathon'.
